The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) handles admissions for 118 premier institutes across India, including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 38 GFTIs. For a JEE 2026 aspirant, understanding this algorithm is just as important as the exam itself. A single mistake can cost you a seat you rightfully deserve.
1. Registration & Choice Filling Algorithm
Once JEE Advanced results are declared, the JoSAA portal springs to life. After logging in with your JEE credentials, you face the most critical step: Choice Filling.
The JoSAA algorithm operates on strict priority. It checks your Option #1. If your rank meets the cutoff, you get the seat. If not, it moves to Option #2, and so on. Golden Rule: Always rank choices based on what you actually desire, not what you think you will get based on last year's cutoffs.

Before the real frenzy begins, JoSAA releases two "Mock Seat Allocations". Think of these as stress tests for your preference list.
- They indicate what seat you might get based on how others have filled their choices up to that exact moment.
- They empower you to reshuffle your lower preferences if the mock results are disappointing.
- Warning: The mock allotment is not a guarantee. Cutoffs shift radically in the final Round 1.
3. The Big Three: Float, Freeze, or Slide?
When you are finally allotted a seat in Round 1, the adrenaline hits. But you must immediately choose your Destiny protocol:
| Action | What it means | Who should use it? |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze ๐ง | You accept the seat with 100% satisfaction. You lock it in and exit further counselling rounds. | Students who got their absolute #1 choice (e.g., IIT Bombay CSE) or are fully satisfied. |
| Float ๐ | You secure the current seat, but tell JoSAA: "Keep checking for better options above this one in the next round." | Almost everyone. It keeps your current seat safe while letting you hunt for upgrades. |
| Slide ๐ | You accept the college but want a better branch only within that specific college. | Students who love the campus they got but want to slide from Civil to Mechanical, for instance. |
4. Document Verification & Fee Payment
Selecting Float/Freeze/Slide means nothing if you do not pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) and upload your verified documents (Class 12 Marks, Category Certificate, Medical Certificate). The verification officials will approve your documents online. Keep checking the portalโif they raise a query, you have a rigid 24-hour window to resolve it, else your seat cancels immediately.
